Hiking in the Dolomites

This past week, Tyler and I returned to the Dolomites for our second annual mid-August / wedding anniversary hiking trip.  Come to think of it, we spent our honeymoon hiking in the Sierras.  Who is planning these trips anyway?? I'll bet you can guess :) We started the week by spending a night in Rome where we got to have dinner with Tyler's aunt Julie, uncle Tom, and cousin Lauren.  It was actually the second time this month we got to see Julie and Tom, since we were able to meet them in Rome a few weeks ago at the start of their vacation in Italy. It was really nice to see some family and catch up with them!  On Sunday we took a night train up to Bolzano, from which point we made our way up to Passo Gardena to begin our hike along the Alta Via 2. It was the exact same point where we left the trail last year, so we just picked up where we left off to see how far we could get.  We hiked for about 5 days, taking it pretty easy to protect my knees and make sure we could really enjoy our time up there. As a result we got to spend a lot of time reading books, eating good German and Italian food, and relaxing at some really nice mountain huts.  We left the trail on Friday afternoon from Passo Valles and made our way back to Cosenza by a series of buses and trains, arriving back at our apartment on Saturday afternoon.  Overall, it was a really fun way to spend our week off work and celebrate two happy years of marriage! Hiking in the Gole del Raganello

A couple of weeks ago we went back up to Civita to hike the Gole del Raganello with our colleague, Sergio, and his family. The Raganello is a big canyon with a river running along the bottom of it. In late summer, when the water is low enough and the air temperature is warm enough, you can hike along the riverbed.  It's more than just a simple walk, it actually involves wading through water (sometimes knee, waist, or chest high) and climbing over boulders.  It was challenging at times, and overall it was really fun. The next day we were pretty sore, mostly in our arms from all the climbing!  To our friends who visited us earlier this summer and went to Civita, this is what we almost made you do... Summer visitors

We were really fortunate this summer to have four friends from the U.S. come to visit us. Our friends from Ann Arbor, Dave and Shayla, came to visit for about 10 days at the end of June, and our friends Paul and Lena (Paul is a friend of Tyler's from undergrad) also came for about 4 days during the same period.  We had a really great time going to the nearby beaches (almost everyday) with them and we also took a road trip to visit some interesting small towns in southern Italy, including Civita, Matera, and Alberobello. It has always been fun to show friends where we live and show them some great sites that are off the typical tourist track.  Despite the summer heat that is typical of southern Italy, I think everyone really enjoyed their time here. Here are a handful of pictures of the fun times we had together. Enjoy!

Our first Calabrian wedding

Earlier this summer, we attended our first wedding here in Italy.  Our neighbors, Pamela and Ernesto got married in June and kindly invited us to the festivities. This was really special for us because we mostly got to know them over the past 1-2 years as Pamela's father, Angelo, was fixing up the house next door for the newlyweds to live in after the wedding. Over time we got to know the family as Tyler and Angelo would chat over the fence, and we would exchange vegetables from the garden or baked goods with one another (our "biscotti Americani", aka chocolate chip cookies, have been a big hit). Because Pamela's mother is part of the family that owns most of the land around us, including the pizzeria on the corner and one of the apartments in our little building, we actually knew a lot more wedding guests than we expected because most of them are our neighbors! The ceremony was held in the middle of new Rende at the Borromeo church (an area described by one of our neighbors as "la zona più bella che c'è", or "the most beautiful area there is"... we tend to disagree but perhaps we've seen a few other cities outside of southern Italy).

The reception was at a nearby restaurant and included more courses food than you can possibly imagine eating in one night. We ate hardly anything that day in preparation, and although the courses were served over about 6 hours, it was still enough dinner for probably 3-4 separate nights. Everything was delicious. It was really fun to see the different traditions and formalities. A highlight of the night for us was the video that they played during the reception (between food courses 6 and 7 perhaps?). Instead of a simple slideshow of pictures, this was a full on reenactment of how, theoretically, the bride and groom found each other and fell in love. It involved her leaving him little notes in hidden spots in the Calabrian countryside and him chasing her down until he found her at the beach (San Lucido, for those of you who have visited us) twirling her hair and waiting anxiously for him. Words cannot accurately describe this video, and we wish we could have gotten a copy of it.  It was a.mazing. It was also fun to see how excited everyone was about it, as well as all of the other additions to the night, including fireworks and the DJ singing really cheesy American love songs.

Another highlight was when we realized that the bride and groom might not actually know both of our names. We thought they knew Tyler's name, but we weren't sure about Lynne. When we had to search for our names on the list of tables at the reception, this is what we found (see the names at the bottom... "moglie" means wife).

To their credit, we actually didn't know the groom's name either, so we waited until after the ceremony to fill out their card. We all played it off just fine, and now we're happy to know that Pamela and Ernesto are our neighbors over the fence.

Gardening

Tyler has been hard at work in the garden this spring!  We have had some beautiful flowers, including some tulips back in April and now some assorted pots along the front walk.  Tyler also planted various seeds and starts for the vegetable garden.  Out front along the driveway, we now have the beginnings of zucchini, lettuce, basil, watermelon, and tomatoes.  There is a small patch of herbs along the front walk like last year, and the strawberries are returning too.  More tomatoes are of course in the works... 26 plants are already in the ground, but there are probably another 50 (!!!) growing indoors right now, and those should go into the ground before too long.  We had peas too (thanks to our neighbor), but those have already been harvested and eaten.  Yum!!

Sicily in the Springtime

At the end of April, we took a long weekend and went to Sicily for about 5 days.  May 1 is a national holiday (aka, no work), and April 26 was Lynne's 30th birthday (eek!) so we figured it was a good excuse for a short vacation.  On the 27th we packed up Skodie with our camping gear and hit the road.  We drove down to the tip of Calabria where you can take a car ferry across the straights of Messina to reach Sicily.  We then drove along the eastern coast to a campsite south of Siracusa, outside of the town of Avola.  The entire drive only took about 5 hrs, ferry and all.  Not bad!

We spent the weekend touring around some great towns like Siracusa, Noto, Modica, and Scicli.  We also went on a few hikes: one in a nature reserve south of Avola, one in the area where the ancient city of Noto used to be located, and another in a canyon outside Ispica.  We ate great food, including cannoli (Lynne's favorite) and granita (which is similar to gelato, but more ice and less cream, and it's completely different in Sicily than anywhere else we've tried it).  We also went to the beach every day and swam in the sea (which is still cold, but swim-able).

Overall, it was one of the best trips we've taken since moving to Italy. If you're looking for a spring travel destination, we recommend Sicily.  The wildflowers are gorgeous, the temperature is perfect, and tourist season hasn't really begun so crowds and prices are both low.  For us, it was paradise :)  Here are some of our photos... Enjoy!

Trip to Paris in March

Hi again,
So we are waaaaay behind in posting things on the blog as of late. But we have done some traveling in the last few months, and we're finally getting around to posting a few pictures!

In early March, we had the wonderful opportunity to go to Paris and meet up with our friends Erin and Eric for a few days.  Tyler and I flew directly from Naples to Paris and spent a couple days wandering around the city by ourselves.  Then we met up with Erin and Eric, who let us stay with them for a few days at Erin's law firm's flat.  We honestly can't thank them enough for inviting us to join them!  We saw many of the great sites of the city, ate great food, walked a ton, and overall had a fantastic trip.  Here are just a handful of our photos.  Erin and Eric have a much nicer camera, so we left a lot of the picture taking to them.  But we still managed to get a few shots of our own.

After our trip to Paris, we both came back to Cosenza and said "so... where are we going next???" See the following post to find out what we decided on :)
