We learned recently that Calabria is the region with the highest number of wildfires in Italy. In the last few weeks, this fact has really become evident to us. Almost every night we can smell smoke in the valley, and once or twice we've seen some actual flames on the distant hillsides. It is just so hot and dry here this time of year, so with a little bit of wind it does not take much to get a wildfire going (especially given the amount of burning that people do around here anyway... we can't imagine why they would still do it at this time of year given the likelihood of fires!). We're pretty safe where we live (so don't worry!), but there do seem to be frequent fires popping up around the valley and the region as a whole.
This evening, we noticed some smoke on the horizon that seemed to be just up the hill from our house (or at least closer than we'd seen before). So we got in the car and drove up to see where it was coming from. It was actually further away than we thought, but the fires were very close to the main road that we take to go the beach as well as along the hills that we drive through/over to get to the coast. We were actually able to get within a safe distance of the fires, so we snapped a couple photos. It was pretty interesting to watch, especially because the sun was setting. We came home both smelling like campfire! Anyways, here are some of the photos we managed to snap...
